5 Things I Wish Accountants Would Tell You Before You Start a Small Business

Starting a business is exciting. You're full of ideas, drive, and big goals. But there’s one thing most people don’t get excited about—accounting. And that’s fair! It’s not the flashy part. But it is the part that can make or break your business long-term.
So here are 5 things we really wish more accountants would tell you before you dive in.
1. Your bank account is not your budget
Just because there’s money in the account doesn’t mean you can spend it. That cash might already be spoken for—taxes, payroll, inventory, subscriptions. Set up a system for your small business that shows you what’s actually yours to spend.
2. You don’t need to be a spreadsheet wizard—but you do need to look at your numbers
You don’t have to become an accountant overnight, but checking in on your finances regularly is non-negotiable. Ignoring them doesn’t make problems go away—it just makes them more expensive. We recommend at least a monthly review of income, expenses, and profit. Even better if you have a bookkeeper or accountant who walks you through it in plain English.
3. Blurred bank account lines = big headaches for your small business
Seriously. Open a separate business bank account. Put business income there. Pay for business expenses from there. Mixing funds makes taxes harder, tracking expenses a nightmare, and can even open you up to legal headaches if you’re an LLC or corporation.
4. A good accountant will teach you, not just talk at you
If you ever leave a meeting with your accountant more confused than when you came in, that’s a red flag 🚩. You deserve someone who explains things clearly, answers your questions, and empowers you to make smart decisions. No jargon, no judgment.
5. Don’t wait until tax season to talk to us
We can help you save money, plan better, and sleep easier if we’re involved
before things go sideways. A quick chat a few times a year can prevent major headaches—and help you grow faster. Think of us as part of your team, not just the person who files your taxes.
Think like a business owner from day one:
Your numbers don’t have to be scary. And you don’t have to do it all alone. The right accountant can be your behind-the-scenes superpower—someone who helps your business stay strong, sustainable, and set up for success. If you’re looking for accountants who actually understand what it’s like to build something from scratch, we’re here—and we’re ready to help you do it right from the start.
